Finding a Mentor: I Got Lucky!! - Short Update

Hello everyone!

I am absolutely over the moon right now! One of the best things you could do as an aspiring business owner is to find a mentor. Ideally you’ll want to find someone who has ran successful businesses in your intended business type so that they can answer any question you might have. Depending on the type of business you are hoping to open, you’ll also want to make for sure that they are local to some extent. For opening a cafe this is crucial since having a brick and mortar food business means there are a lot of area specific laws and regulations you’ll need to abide by, as well as permits you’ll need to have.

I got EXTREMELY lucky and was able to match with a mentor whose work I admire. He is the owner of a few restaurants including a gay bar in the same county that I plan to open my cafe. Although we’ve only just started correspondence I’m really excited to build this relationship! If you’re ever looking for a mentor, SCORE is a good place to start. They try and match you with local mentors in your business category. That’s how I found my mentor.

Honestly I’m relieved. I’ve been worried and stressed about all of my unanswered questions. Opening a business is a painful reminder that it’s extremely difficult - if not impossible - to do this on my own. I’ll keep you updated with everything I learn!
